Heights with a link have their own detailed page. The Devine formula is not meant for heights under 5 feet, so those rows show n/a.
How to read the ideal height and weight chart
The healthy range applies to both men and women: BMI does not change by sex. The two Devine columns show where a formula puts a single target. Women tend to be closer to the lower half of the range and men to the upper half, since men usually have more muscle and heavier bones.
Being anywhere inside the range is healthy. There is no need to chase the exact middle.
Ideal weight according to height and age
For adults, age does not change the range. After 65, doctors often prefer people to stay in the upper half of it because a small reserve protects against illness and frailty. For children, a growth chart by age replaces this table; see kids weight by age and the baby weight chart.
Ideal weight chart for women
Most Indian women are between 4 feet 11 and 5 feet 5. For them the healthy span runs from about 42 kg at the shortest to about 62 kg at the tallest. Detailed pages: 4'11, 5'0, 5'1, 5'2, 5'3, 5'4, 5'5. The women's BMI guide adds notes on hormones and pregnancy.
Ideal weight chart for men
Most Indian men are between 5 feet 4 and 5 feet 10, with a healthy span from about 49 kg to 72 kg. Detailed pages: 5'6, 5'7, 5'8, 5'9, 5'10, 5'11, 6'0 and 6'2 and above. Lifters can weigh more than the range and still be lean.
Height weight BMI calculator
If your height is not in the table, use the calculator above. It turns any height into the same healthy range and adds the four ideal body weight formulas. For the formulas themselves, see the ideal body weight page.
Beyond the chart
- Waist below 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women).
- Steady weight over months, rather than big swings.
- Strength to climb stairs and carry shopping with ease.
- Normal blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol.
A chart is a guide for healthy adults. Pregnancy, illness, very high muscle mass and old age all change what is right. A doctor can set a personal target.
How this chart was made
Each healthy range is BMI × height in metres squared, using 18.5 and 22.9 from the Indian consensus guidelines and 24.9 from the WHO list. The Devine figure is 45.5 kg (women) or 50 kg (men) plus 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. All numbers are calculated, not copied from other charts.
