BMI Calculator for Women: Female BMI in kg

BMISame bands as menAge notesChecked 2 Nov 2026

This BMI calculator for women takes your height and weight and returns a BMI, the band you fall in, and the weight range that is healthy for your height. Women use the same BMI formula and the same adult bands as men, at every age from 18.

What differs is how the number should be read. Women carry more body fat than men at the same BMI, and life stages such as pregnancy and menopause change body shape. This page explains those points and adds the waist check that matters most for women in India.

Quick numbers

  • Formula

    kg ÷ (height in m)²
  • Healthy, Indian women

    18.5 to 22.9
  • Healthy, WHO

    18.5 to 24.9
  • Waist to watch

    above 80 cm
  • Example 5'3, 58 kg

    BMI 22.7

How the female BMI calculator works

Enter your height in cm or in feet and inches, and your weight in kg. The result shows your BMI to one decimal, your band under the Indian and WHO lists, and how many kg you are from the edge of the healthy range.

A woman of 5 feet 3 inches (160.0 cm) who weighs 58 kg: 58 ÷ (1.600 × 1.600) = 22.7. That is healthy under both lists.

BMI calculator for women by age

The adult bands do not change with age. A woman of 25 and a woman of 55 with the same BMI land in the same band. Even so, what sits under the number changes: muscle tends to fall after 40 and fat moves toward the waist after menopause.

So for women over 45, a waist measure says more than a small rise in BMI. Strength training two days a week helps keep muscle and bone, and protein at each meal supports it. See the BMI by age page for the full picture.

Why women carry more fat at the same BMI

Healthy women have about 8 to 10 percentage points more body fat than men of the same BMI. Some of it is essential for hormones and pregnancy. That is why a body fat of 25 percent is average for a woman but high for a man.

If you want to see your fat level directly, the body fat calculator works from neck, waist and hip measurements.

Waist size for Indian women

A waist above 80 cm, measured at the navel, signals extra fat around the organs in Indian women, even when BMI is normal. Doctors call this a thin-outside, fat-inside pattern, and it is common in South Asia. It links to higher risk of type 2 diabetes, PCOS symptoms and heart disease.

Measure in the morning, standing relaxed, tape snug but not tight. Check every month rather than every day.

Pregnancy, PCOS and thyroid

  • Pregnancy: BMI is not used during pregnancy. Your weight before pregnancy sets the gain target; see the pregnancy weight gain calculator.
  • PCOS: weight gain around the middle is common. Even a 5 percent loss can make cycles more regular, so set small targets.
  • Thyroid: an underactive thyroid can add weight and tiredness. A simple blood test checks it.

If your BMI is under 17, your periods have stopped, or you feel you cannot control eating or exercise, please speak to a doctor. Help is available and works.

What to do with your result

If you are in the healthy band, aim to stay there with steady habits. If you are above it, a loss of 5 to 10 percent of body weight already improves blood sugar and blood pressure. Use the calorie deficit calculator for a gentle target and the protein calculator so the loss comes from fat, not muscle. If you are below it, see the weight gain page.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI different for women and men?

No. The formula and the adult bands are the same. Women naturally have more body fat at the same BMI, and the bands already allow for that.

What is a healthy BMI for an Indian woman?

Between 18.5 and 22.9 under Indian guidelines. A BMI of 23 to 24.9 counts as overweight in India even though WHO calls it normal.

What weight suits a woman who is 5 feet 3 inches tall?

A healthy range is about 47.4 to 58.6 kg on Indian bands, and up to 63.8 kg on WHO bands.

Does the BMI calculator for women change with age?

The bands stay the same for every adult age. With age, waist size and muscle become more useful to track alongside BMI.

Can I use the BMI calculator for women during pregnancy?

No. Use your pre-pregnancy weight and the pregnancy weight gain calculator, and follow your obstetrician's advice.

How do I measure my BMI in kg and feet?

Enter feet and inches in the height box and kilograms in the weight box. The calculator converts height to metres for you.
