This ideal weight chart for kids lists the typical (median) weight and height for boys and girls from 1 to 10 years, taken from the WHO growth standards and reference. A 3 year old boy typically weighs about 14.3 kg, a 5 year old girl about 18.2 kg, and a 10 year old boy about 31 kg.
Healthy children come in many sizes. A child can sit well above or below the median and be perfectly healthy if they grow steadily along their own curve. What matters most is the pattern over time, which a paediatrician checks on a growth chart.

| 10 years | 31.2 | 31.9 | 137.8 | 138.6 |
Median means half of healthy children are above this number and half below. These figures come from the WHO Child Growth Standards up to 5 years and the WHO growth reference from 5 to 10. IAP charts for Indian children over 5 sit close to these values.
Normal weight range for 2 to 5 year olds
| Age | Boys normal range (kg) | Girls normal range (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 years | 9.7 to 15.3 | 9.0 to 14.8 |
| 3 years | 11.3 to 18.3 | 10.8 to 18.1 |
| 4 years | 12.7 to 21.2 | 12.3 to 21.5 |
| 5 years | 14.1 to 24.2 | 13.7 to 24.9 |
Most children fall inside these ranges. A child outside them is not automatically unhealthy, but it is worth a check with the doctor.
Ideal weight for a 3 year old boy and other toddlers
Between 2 and 5, children gain about 2 kg a year and grow 6 to 9 cm. A 2 year old boy is typically around 12 kg, a 3 year old boy about 14 kg and a 4 year old boy about 16 kg. Girls run a few hundred grams lighter at most ages. Toddlers often look slimmer as they get taller and more active, which is normal.
Hindi speaking parents often ask how much a 3 saal ka baccha should weigh; the answer is the same as above, about 14 kg for boys and 13.9 kg for girls.
Weight for 6 to 10 year olds
From 6 to 10, weight gain speeds up a little to about 2.5 to 3 kg a year. Girls often start puberty from 8 to 13 and boys from 9 to 14, and weight can jump before height catches up. For a 7 year old girl, about 22 kg is typical; for an 8 year old boy, about 25 kg; for a 10 year old girl, about 32 kg.
For older children, BMI for age is a better check than weight alone, because it accounts for height. Try the child BMI checker.
Children 11 to 14
Puberty makes weight spread out widely. Indian Academy of Pediatrics charts put the middle weight for 12 year old boys at roughly 37 to 40 kg and for 12 year old girls at roughly 38 to 41 kg, with wide normal ranges. A growth spurt can add 5 to 8 kg in a year. A paediatrician will read weight together with height and pubertal stage.
How to read your child's weight
- Weigh at the same time of day in light clothes, ideally on the same scale.
- Measure height standing against a wall, without shoes.
- Write both down with the date every three to six months.
- Compare the trend, not one number. Steady growth along a curve is the goal.
For babies under 1 year, see the baby weight chart by month, and for birth weight, the newborn weight page.
When to talk to a paediatrician
See the doctor if your child loses weight, stops gaining for six months, crosses two lines on the growth chart, is far above or below the ranges here, eats very little or very much, or seems tired and unwell. Never put a child on a weight loss diet without medical advice.
Healthy habits matter more than numbers: three meals and two snacks, milk or curd daily, fruit and vegetables, limited sweets and packaged snacks, and at least an hour of active play a day.
Adult targets come later
Once a teen stops growing, around 16 to 18, adult measures start to apply. The ideal weight calculator and the adult height and weight chart cover those ages.
