BMI Calculator Chart: BMI Table and Normal Range

BMI150 to 185 cmNormal rangeChecked 2 Nov 2026

This BMI calculator chart lets you find your BMI without any maths: run along the row for your weight in kg until you reach the column for your height in cm, and read the number. Then compare it with the band table. For exact values, enter your height and weight in the calculator above.

Two band lists are shown because they disagree in the middle. WHO calls 18.5 to 24.9 normal. Indian guidelines call 18.5 to 22.9 normal and start overweight at 23.

BMI ideal weight from the chart

The chart works backwards too. Find your height column, go down until the number passes 22.9: the weight on that row is about the top of your healthy range. Go up until it drops below 18.5 for the bottom. The height and weight chart has these ranges already worked out in kg for every inch.

Normal BMI range by sex and age

The adult normal range is shared by both sexes and holds at every age from 18. Children and teens are read on BMI for age charts; see the child BMI page. People over 65 often do better a little higher within the range.

Ideal BMI

There is no single perfect BMI. Large studies of Asian adults found the lowest risk of illness roughly between 20 and 23. Within the normal range, a steady weight, a man's waist under 90 cm or a woman's under 80 cm, and regular activity matter more than the exact decimal.

Reading the chart for Indians

If your number falls between 23 and 25, the WHO chart would call you normal, but Indian doctors would suggest acting now. A loss of 3 to 4 kg often moves you back under 23. The reasons are explained on the Indian BMI page, and the maths on the formula page.

A chart is a screening tool. Talk to your doctor when the chart shows a value below 17, or one above 30, or if your number changed quickly without a reason.

When the chart misleads

  • Very muscular people read high.
  • Older adults with little muscle can read normal with too much fat.
  • Pregnant women should not use it; see the pregnancy page.
  • Heights outside 150 to 185 cm need the calculator.
