This treadmill calorie calculator works out the energy you burn from belt speed, incline, minutes and body weight. It uses the walking and running equations from exercise science, which are well suited to treadmills because speed and slope are fixed and known. Walking 30 minutes at 5 km/h on a flat belt burns about 124 kcal if you weigh 70 kg; raise the incline to 10 percent and it jumps to about 282 kcal.
Incline is the treadmill's secret weapon. It raises the effort far more than a small speed increase, while staying kind to the knees.

How the incline treadmill calorie calculator works
Walking oxygen use = 0.1 × speed (m/min) + 1.8 × speed × grade + 3.5
Running oxygen use = 0.2 × speed (m/min) + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5
MET = oxygen use ÷ 3.5; kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × kg ÷ 200
Grade is the incline as a decimal: 5 percent is 0.05. Speed in metres per minute is km/h × 1,000 ÷ 60. The walking equation is meant for speeds up to about 6.5 km/h; above that, most people jog, so use the running setting.
10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes on the treadmill
A brisk flat walk at 5.5 km/h burns about 44 kcal in 10 minutes and about 66 kcal in 15 for a 70 kg person. Twenty minutes of easy running at 8 km/h burns about 211 kcal. Thirty minutes of incline walking at 12 percent and 5.5 km/h, a popular routine, burns about 341 kcal.
Why the machine's number is higher
Many treadmills ask for your weight but not your fitness, assume you never hold the handrails, and round up. Holding the rails takes much of the load off the legs and can cut the real burn by a quarter or more. Let go, swing your arms and lower the speed if needed.
Treadmill vs outdoors
With no wind and a moving belt, flat treadmill running is a touch easier than running outside. A 1 percent incline roughly evens it out. Walking indoors and outdoors cost about the same. For outdoor walks and runs see walking calories and running calories.
Building a treadmill routine
- Warm up for 5 minutes at an easy walk.
- Alternate 2 minutes at a higher incline with 2 minutes flat.
- Cool down for 5 minutes and stretch.
- Add 1 percent incline or 2 minutes each week.
Stop if you feel dizzy, chest discomfort or unusual breathlessness, and see a physician before the next session. Use the safety clip if your treadmill has one.
Planning around the treadmill
Three 30 minute incline walks a week burn roughly 600 to 900 kcal for most adults. Combine with a calorie target from the deficit planner and see other options on the calorie burn calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What do 30 minutes on a treadmill burn?
About 124 kcal walking flat at 5 km/h and up to 376 kcal running at 9.7 km/h, for 70 kg.
Does incline burn more calories on a treadmill?
Yes, a lot. Walking at 10 percent incline can nearly double the burn of flat walking at the same speed.
10 min treadmill calories burned: roughly how many?
About 41 to 125 kcal at 70 kg; speed and slope set the rest.
Are treadmill calorie counts accurate?
Usually they read high. Use a formula based calculator and do not hold the rails.
How many calories does 20 minutes on a treadmill burn?
Roughly 83 to 251 kcal for 70 kg.
Is treadmill walking good for weight loss?
Yes, especially with incline. Pair it with a modest calorie deficit for steady progress.
